Mars Viewing at UCLA - Sept. 3, 2003

On the evening of September 3, 2003, the UCLA Department of Physics and Astronomy held a successful public Mars viewing event on the roof of Math Sciences from 7:30-11:00pm. A sky show and Mars presentation were shown three times throughout the night in the planetarium, and there were five telescopes set up on the roof for viewing (24" reflector, 14" reflector, 10" reflector, Dobsonian, 4" refractor). We estimate that 250-300 people attended throughout the night, and had a maximum of 200-210 people on the roof at one time at ~8:30pm.

These images were taken by graduate student Seth Hornstein on the evening of September 3 using an SBIG ST-7 CCD camera attached to the UCLA 24" Telescope.

3-Color Image: This image is created from the three above images by mapping the R-band image to the RED channel, the V-band image to the GREEN channel, and the B-band image to the BLUE channel. The relative brightnesses of each color are adjusted so that the final image looks similar as it would when looking at Mars with the human eye.
