Preliminary Results from an HST-NICMOS Paschen alpha survey of the Galactic center: fine-scale filamentation in the ionized component

Mills, E.A., Morris, M.R., Lang, C.C., Wang, Q.D. and eight coauthors

Abstract:
We present preliminary images from a large-scale Paschen alpha survey of the Galactic center region undertaken with NICMOS on HST. Regions mapped in this field include the entire Sgr A complex, the radio Arc, and the two starburst clsuters, the Quintuplet and Arches, as well as the areas they ionize. The extremely high spatial resolution of these data over a field that extends ~ 75 x 25 parsecs at the 8 kpc distance of the Galactc center will allow for unprecedented study of the detailed morphology of this active and complex region. In this preliminary study, we compare structures visible in the Paschen alpha images to those in high resolution Radio images from the VLA. In particular we concentrate on characterizing regions of highly organized, fine-scale filamentation seen in the Pa-alpha images. The possible mechanisms underlying such filamentation will be discussed.

2007-2008 CFAO Professional Development Program Workshop

Re-Thinking Science Learning and Teaching

Santa Cruz, CA
November 30, 2007

This was an all-day workshop introducing the participants to the idea of inquiry-based learning. We did a variety of hands-on science activities, putting ourselves in the students place, and discussed at length how these activities were effective, and compared them to our own experiences learning and teaching science. We also read some current science education literature, and saw examples of the teaching experiences that last years participants had.

Experiencing and Applying Inquiry in Science Learning and Teaching

Maui, Hawaii
March 13-17 2008

This was the second part of the workshop series, in which we designed an activity that our team would then teach to a group of students at a later date. To prepare to design an inquiry activity, we completed a full inquiry activity ourselves. We also discussed further science education literature, and toward the end of the workshop, we were able to concentrate on working with our design group to put together or modify an activity to give students a hands-on learning experience in our field.

Facilitating Learners Engaged in Inquiry

Santa Cruz, CA
May 9, 2008

This was the third part of the workshop, a half day program to prepare us for facilitating our inquiry activity. We covered effective strategies, and role-played various scenarios that might arise in the course of teaching.

Po'okela - CFAO Astronomy Short Course

Maui Community College
June 23-27, 2008

Po'okela is a multi-week program designed for Native Hawaiian high school students. I helped design and teach a week-long portion of this program that focused on astronomy. My design group focused on one particular activity for that week - an inquiry into stellar populations from which students would gain an understanding of how the colors of stars relate to their other properties. More information on that activity can be found here
