Nearby Galaxies


The above figure shows the distribution on the sky of the 7822 galaxies in the NASA Extragalactic Database with redshifts less than 3000 km/sec. The galactic center is the center of this equal-area map, the North Galactic Pole is the center of the left circle, the South Galactic Pole is the center of the right circle. While this is not an unbiased survey, the most striking feature in the map [the band running from lower left through the NGP to the upper right is the left circle] is the super-galactic plane, shown in red, and the other features are mostly real structures in the galaxy distribution.
